St. Patrick's Day- Let's Get Green!

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's day has been celebrated over 1000 years, always on the same day that is March 17th. And this celebration is religious, because the Irish commemorate the death anniversary of this saint. What families usually do,  is to attempt church in the morning and celebrate and partying hard in the afternoon.

But who’s Saint Patrick?

He is the man that introduced the Catholicism into Ireland and also the Patron. Besides he wasn’t born in Ireland, he was born in Britain near the 4th century. Se he was with his family very happy when a pirates came up, attacked his family and then he was taken as a prisoner (not a very happy family). Then the raiders transported him to Ireland, and there he spent six years of his life in captivity, where he worked as a shepherd, and as he was very lonely and sad, he turned Christian and he dreamed to turn the Irish people into Christians.

St Patrick
So he had a revelation of God, telling him to escape, and he did that. Then he had a second revelation, where an angel told him to go back to Ireland, but this time as a missionary.
And Patrick was a very nice person and as he knew the language, he taught the people in their native language. Although he didn’t wanted to take off all the Irish native beliefs se to celebrate the Spring he used a bonfire, because the Irish were use to honor their gods with fire. He also taught the people with a shamrock, that symbolizes the trinity. And the color green doesn’t have anything in common; it is associated with the land of Ireland that is very green. Also there is a legend that says that St. Patrick drove all the snakes all of Ireland, but this probably did not occur because there is no evidence of snakes in the island; it is believed that this is a metaphor, because he drove out the pagans.

Facts

  • St. Patrick color was blue.
  • There are 34.7 million U.S residents with Irish ancestry. This is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.
  • The traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal is beef and cabbage.
  • The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on March 17th 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City.
  • Boston and New York City are the homes of St. Patrick’s Day parade and the best celebrations.

Kites

Kites

The kites have been used since a lot of time, the first to use this ‘experiment’ were the Chinese (what does they don’t do). About 200 B.C.  Chinese General Han Hsin flew a kite over the walls of a city he was attacking to measure how far his army would have to tunnel to reach past the defenses. Knowing this distance his troops reached inside of the city, surprised their enemy and were victorious.
Also in Japan, Korea and almost all of Asia flying kites began a very popular activity. At the end of the 18th century, the kites arrived to Europe.
Men like Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Wilson used kites to develop their knowledge. They used this method to learn more about weather and even the atmospheric pressure.

My experience

I tried so bad to make a kite, I was so close, but then I realized that the worsted was very thin so it did not worked, but I didn’t gave up, I tried to fly my kite, but it was really difficult and it wasn’t aerodynamic. That’s why I decided to get one. I must mention that is quite hard to make a kite by your own if you don’t know. I asked my mother and she told me that kites were made with a specific steam because it won’t break because it is very flexible. Perhaps I’ll do one by myself, rustic and aerodynamic.
When I got to the school, to the class where we were going to fly kites, I tried so hard to make it fly, but there were no wind, how are you going to fly a kite if there is no WIND? So my efforts were worthless.
After a while I saw that there were more wind and in the second hour I started and tried again to fly my kite, then I realized that the few wind that were blowing, was blowing to a certain direction then I though “oh, I have to go against that direction to make my kite fly” so when the wind blown I ran and the kite finally raised, it lasted tike 3 minutes on the air before it came down, but then I realized that I made it,   I accomplished the challenge.
It was a great activity because it was under the sun and I ended up all sun burned but I really enjoy the sun. also it was exercise, because I ran through all the field but when you do things like that, you can realize that you don’t need technology to have fun, because you have your friends and that’s very important, also I relaxed because when you are alone, running and thinking, without someone’s else’s company, you have time for yourself, to enjoy what you are doing, and doing it carefully with all your attention on it.

I believe this is a great idea and activity to do on a picnic with your friends, parents, sons,  boyfriend or even by yourself, as I mentioned you don’t need technology to have fun.
